      So, the Earth orbits the Sun and the Moon orbits the Earth. What this means is that the Moon on average is the same distance (150 million kilometers) from the Sun as the Earth. On some parts of the Moon’s orbit it will be closer (147 million km) to the Sun than the Earth and on some parts it will be further away (152 million km). It’s not just about the Moon’s orbit around the Earth either: remember the Earth doesn’t orbit the Sun in a perfect circle, it moves in an ellipse which is a squished circle. Now, the orbit is not squished very much but it’s enough to cause the changes in orbit distance above.
